Meeting the Last Mile Challenge 3 – Talent Recruitment with the Right Targeting
As the business is rapidly expanding, a courier company is in need of frontline staff. Mclaren Consultancy is recruiting for the company.
BBS / Forum for Candidate Search
- Apart from advertising on traditional job boards, guided by the understanding towards the job seekers’ lifestyle, Mclaren Consultancy also posts ads on selected BBS/ forums where the targeted candidates hang around.
- A total of 82 candidates gave feedbacks and were interviewed
- 44 from Job boards
- 38 from BBS/Forums
- 15 of the 82 feedbacks has shown interest in the job vacancies, representing an 18.3% ‘success rate’.

Key learning
- Going where the candidates go is important for successful recruitment, BBS/Forums in this case.
- Logistic (with 177,615 employees1) and Customer Services (with 267,796 employees in the Retail Industry2) are the primary and secondary labour targets for the Courier Industry.
- Educating the students, the young people and the customer services people as well as building good employer brands for the companies are important to attract the people to join. The Construction Industry sets a great example.
- Live with the gig – looking to the West, the gig trend is inevitable. The courier companies are better to prepare themselves for the up and coming.
Candidates with logistic and customer services job backgrounds showed the greatest interest – the more familiar with the Courier Industry, the greater their interest.
- The 82 candidates are from three job backgrounds
- Logistic industry (operation & executive)
- Customer services
- Fresh graduates
- Eventually, 32% of the logistic candidates and 11% of the customer services are shortlisted for further assessment. The former is more familiar with the Courier Industry.
- Only 1 fresh graduate has shown interest, suggesting young people are not very interested in courier jobs, especially the operation.

Likes
- A is a large company. It is seen resourceful. It boosts confidence.
- Expect good job stability / security.
Dislikes
- Perceived as below market salary
- Concerned about long working hours
- Non-5-day workweek
Company A can better position itself in the labor market if it communicates well about its remuneration especially related to working hours.
